Old Fashioned Butler Sink With Wooden Drainers

Wooh how this image takes me back to the bad old days of single glazed windows and freezing cold family houses.  We used to live in a variety of places that were lumped together in any military etting as ‘married quarters’.  Provided for serving personnel who happened to also be married, with families.   The kitchen in our last one, which serves as the memory for me, was tiny, more like a scullery.  We had a large walk-in larder that had 3  marble shelves and ceramic tiles on the floor.   This was in the days before families had a refrigerator as standard.  The idea was that all cold goods had to go straight into the larder.  The marble shelves kept items much colder than our normal food cabinets do today.  They were otherwise pretty grim!  The sink was large ceramic and would impress today’s housewife – it was big enough to bath a child.  The wooden draining boards were never as cold to the toddler bottom as todays hi tech granite workspace!
